I Love George Takai

Our friend Mary over at Tactless Wonder sent Steve and I this HILARIOUS "public service announcement" featuring Mr. Sulu himself, George Takai. In it, he addresses the recent homophobic remarks by basketball player, Tim Hardaway; it's from an episode of Jimmy Kimmel.

Anyway, for years you would go to parties featuring "gay men of a certain era," and they would invariably have some photo from some party at someone's pool and in the background would be George Takai in a speedo lounging by the pool. And whenever Steve and I would see it, we would think, "This is the worst kept secret in Hollywood."

So what I love now is that since he came out, George has gotten a whole new renewal in the public eye. Not just from this great humor piece, but also on Heroes, Howard Stern, and other shows. He's back in the pop culture spotlight and I think it's a direct link to him embracing his identity and being very unashamed.

I applaud George... especially when he's shirtless, sporting crazy gay eyes, and about to stab me with his long saber.

Groovy.

This is why closeted stars frustrate me so. I think redemption comes if you come out. Especially in a such a gay mecca like Hollywood which, I would think, doesn't require as much bravery in Alcoa, TN, right?

But in any case, groovy.

I actually don't think he was ever really in the closet was he?

I mean I think the general public is more aware of his gay side now becuase he's being asked to do things that are entirely more tongue in cheek.

But I remember many, many years ago a friend commented, very offhandedly to me that George would, again, be running in the Front Runners Walk and Stride for Pride some Gay weekend in the 80's. And I was SHOCKED.

Okay, not shocked, but surprised because 1) I didn't know he was gay, 2) was surprised he'd be with several hundred other gay people and a ton of news cameras and c) He was Sulu for goodness sake.

Anyway, I think it's more changing times than Mr. Takei suddenly comming out.
