EDITOR (very urgent voice): Hey, I'm stuck at Sundance and the Editor in Chief is in Italy. what are you doing on Tuesday?
ME: Working at my new job. Why?
EDITOR: I need someone at ??:00pm to go to the Chateau Marmont and interview Kylie Minogue
No, I can't call in sick, can't sneak out, can't say Steve is in the hospital, can't use any of the 100 excuses you're all screaming at me to use right now. Well, okay, technically I could but there are many other reasons why I don't think it would be right and have to stick with this new job and not skate out for what would have been the most exciting moment in my writing career since interviewing Jennifer Garner and Lynda Carter.
It's a sad day at our house. Truly.

NOOOOOOO! You're a better man than me. I would use the dog at the vet excuse and just do it. I would worry about rent the next day after the glow had subsided. I'm hating it for ya. I hope some good karma comes your way for this. You deserve it.
Seriously?
It all depends, how long would the interview process last? couple hours? You couldn't make up the time lost? "Nothing ventured, nothing gained."
Such a logistical nightmare. My work is about 45-minutes to an hour from le Chateau, interview will take approx 20-30 minutes (if it starts on time), then 45-minutes back to work (probably an hour by then) and the second half of the day is shot.
So basically I'd have to take a half day, but there are other factors involving being at a new job, needing to be with my boss during that time, yadda yadda yadda.
We should compare disappointment on this front. I got a similar call. :) And I am on a plane tomorrow morning. I don't mind being second choice to you! xo
You have a lot of integrity, sir!
wow, seriously, rick! you definitely can NOT let go this opportunity. use your grandma if you have to :-)
I mean that interview will be how long? maybe a few hours maximum. you can still go back to work right after that and tell that the problem could be solved quicker than you thought.
no big deal. DO IT!
You mean you couldn't just tell them that you have the chance to interview one of the most famous women on the planet and could you please just get the day off without pay?
I will volunteer to fly out and interview her myself, if you like....
